How it works

The balance grows as P × (1 + i)^m + c × ((1 + i)^m − 1) ÷ i, where P is your current savings, c the monthly contribution, i the yearly return divided by 12 and m the number of months. Contributions are added at the end of each month.

Inflation shrinks what money buys. The balance in today's money divides the future balance by (1 + inflation)^years, which shows what it would buy at today's prices. Investment growth is the future balance minus everything you paid in.

Worked example

With 30,000.00 saved now and 500.00 a month at 7% a year for 25 years, the balance grows to 576,798.39. You pay in 180,000.00, so 396,798.39 is growth. With 2.5% inflation a year, that is 311,119.63 in today's money.
